Description
About twelve kilometers from the county seat, the parish of S. Matias is located on the right bank of the Odearce stream, a tributary of the Guadiana river. It consists of the places of Monte de Apariça, Quinta da Carocha and S. Matias, in a territorial extension that almost reaches seven thousand hectares.
In the extreme north of the municipality of Beja, it is delimited by the parishes of S. Brissos, Santa Maria da Feira and Nossa Senhora das Neves and, to the north, through the municipality of Cuba. The oldest times in this parish are unknown, since archaeological remains and toponymic information are not abundant. It is known, however, that the village already existed, in administrative terms, around the 15th century.
Currently, with about seven hundred inhabitants, S. Matias develops his professional activity essentially in agriculture and also in commerce. , industry and services.
